Considering taste and nutrition

The oldest research center in Japan

Our company was established in 1987 in Hodogaya, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

In 1999, it was relocated to the Shizuoka Factory, making it easier to conduct in-depth research into pet food. In 2010, it was renamed the Healthy Food Science Institute, and has been devoting its efforts to pet food research with the mission of "pursuing the health and longevity of pets."

From 2011 to 2018, we introduced a short-term study abroad program at the University of Illinois to gather knowledge about pet nutrition, and are strengthening our efforts toward further globalization.

A dedicated veterinary care and management system

Our core philosophy in animal care and management is to provide an environment that closely resembles a typical household.
We focus on creating food that pets will enjoy in a typical household setting, while efforts to provide a warm, stress-free environment.

With daily health checks by our in-house veterinarians and ongoing observations by our care staff, We put efforts to create an environment that supports long-term health and well-being.

For pets living in Japan

Just as people's lives have changed, the environment in which pets are kept has also evolved over time. What began with pets being fed leftovers has now developed into a market with a wide variety of pet foods available.

We continuously consider what type of food is best suited for the pet-care environment in Japan, develop recipes to adapt to these changes, and spot efforts to create pet food that supports the health and longevity of pets.

The evolution of pet food

As pet food development continues to advance, pet lifespans are also increasing. Japan’s first domestically produced dog food, Vita-One, is naturally evolving as well.

Pet food is constantly evolving—not only in taste, texture, and manufacturing technology, but also through the incorporation of targeted nutritional ingredients that support healthy living, along with various initiatives aimed at enhancing quality of life.

In addition to becoming more particular about their preferences and more conscious of their pets’ nutrition, customers are also increasingly aware of their pets’ overall health and happiness.

In response to these changing market needs, we continuously refine our pet food by designing kibble sizes that are easy to eat and digestible, nutritional designs to suit different life stages, developing health-conscious recipes, blending ingredients to enhance palatability, and incorporating freeze-drying technology to preserve both flavor and nutritional value.

Extensive research wide variety of dog food, cat food, and small animal food.

Through the care of not only dogs and cats, but also small animals such as rabbits and hamsters, we have accumulated extensive research in areas including animal nutrition, feeding behavior and palatability, clinical veterinary medicine, and the safety of pet food.

Furthermore, we conduct ongoing scientific and practical research on pet food living in Japan on a daily basis. At our test plant, we study manufacturing techniques and physical properties, while also focusing on quality control, quality evaluation, and the collection of technical data.

Our development story

It has been nearly a quarter of a century since the industry's first mixed food, "Combo," was introduced in 1997, combining various ingredients with dry food. As the relationship between pets and their owners deepens year after year, we revisited our roots and, in 2020, developed "Combo Pure," aiming to minimize additives while enhancing flavor for our beloved dogs who enjoy it every day.

We adopted an original pure manufacturing method that enhances the palatability of the pellets, along with a freeze-dried topping that preserves the natural flavors of ingredients.
We also prioritize environmentally friendly packaging materials. Today, we offer not only food for dogs but also for cats, as well as wet food and treats, all while staying true to our pure philosophy.

The Secret to Deliciousness

Pet food continues to improve year after year, becoming increasingly tastier, and we have worked hard to make it even more delicious. Based on the hypothesis that there is a connection between the living environment and palatability of pets in Japan, we created prototypes, conducted repeated tastings, and ultimately developed a delicious product that incorporates elements of Japanese food culture.

This remains the secret behind the unmatched deliciousness of Japanese pet food products today and will continue to captivate pets throughout Japan.
